Brave New World Essays (721 words) - Brave New World,

Brave New World The book that I read was Brave New World. It was written by Aldous Huxley. Huxley was born in England on July 26, 1894. He came to the States in 1937. Throughout his writing career he wrote many types of things. His works included novels, poetry, and essays.Huxley had established himself as a prestigious writer by the time that he was thirty. He also received the Award of Merit for his novel Island., from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He died Nov. 22 1963. In California. I want to give you some background about the book before I get into the theme. The book itself takes place in a futuristic London. The entire Western Europe is controlled by one man, the Ford. The Ford's name is Mustapha Mond. In this society all of the people are hatched. The idea of people Giving birth is repulsive as well as is the idea of anyone wanting to be alone. Every persons future is predetermined. They are made to fit a cast system And they can never break away from that cast. Some people are smart and well respected and others are looked at like they are the scum of the earth. The primary objective of This society is to be social. To have fun, and to have sex with no commitment. Dealing with problems is no problem for these people because of a drug called Soma. Soma is like a tranquilizer that puts you in a place that you want to be and has no side-effects. So they never have to face reality. The book is centered around four main Characters The Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning, a scientist named Lenina , another scientist Bernard and the Savage,John. The theme of the book is that people need to be looked as an individual with specific needs and concerns and feelings not that we should all be the same way all of the time The theme of the book starts with John. John is a young man that has lived his entire life on an Indian reservation. And has had no contact with the new modernized world. John is brought back from the Reservation to the city by Bernard and Lenina who were visiting the reservation for a vaction. At first he doesn't know what to make of this new exciting Place with its lights and smells and music going all of the time. This is shown many times in things that characters say. The passage that I'm going to read it shows John's lack of interest for the city. The excerpt is from a letter written by Bernard to Mustapha Mond about Johns addaptation to the city.(book pg. 160) As the book progresses and John spends more time in the city He begins to dislike it more and more. That is the primarily Due to the fact that Bernard begins to just want to show John off To the high-ups in the city. It is obvious that John is becoming defensive about how much he want to be out in public. You can tell this just by his responses to Bernard in this quote. (book pg. 175) Eventually John gets so feed up with the Brave New World that He feels that he must leave. He prepares as much supplies that He can. He leaves and goes to a valley on the outskirts of town To an abandon Lighthouse. He remained there self-sufficient Until a few travelers found that he was there they immediately Notified the media and soon reporters were bothering him again. He became more upset and aggressive, but the reporters completely Overlooked that. This further shows the theme that people in this Society are more interested in the social aspect of the city than Any person within the city. Here is a few lines toward the end of The book that helps reinforce the idea that the people of this Society don't get the concept that there are things more important Than looks and social activities.(book pg. 263) I think that the book is trying to tell us not to let the idea of new bigger and supposedly better things for ourselves get in the way of treating our fellow human beings with the dignity that they diserve. I think that this is a very good book and very well written . I would recomend it

How effective is the use of first person narrative in The Yellow Wallpaper Essay Example

How effective is the use of first person narrative in The Yellow Wallpaper Essay Example How effective is the use of first person narrative in The Yellow Wallpaper Paper How effective is the use of first person narrative in The Yellow Wallpaper Paper Essay Topic: Literature The Yellow Wallpaper The yellow wallpaper is a story dominated by the protagonist, as she is isolated from the world and society except for the servant girl Jennie and her husband John. The advantages of using first person narrative in this article are the strong emotional and mental link with the protagonist, which can be portrayed much more effectively than any other perspective of the story. Also the point of view on Johns and the other characters, however few, actions and comments are biased to the protagonists thoughts and feelings. The protagonist also has a closer relationship with the audience than if it were in another perspective and the reader had more segregation from the main character. The first person perspective allow the protagonist to collude with the reader, this collusion would not be possible with third person perspective and second person perspective could only give another persons view of the events and with this story they would have had to have been a fly on the wall. The protagonist can make the reader sympathize with her in a way which can portray her as the victim of isolation with the only mental stimulus being the maddening, encompassing visage of the faded and tattered wallpaper that invades her thoughts and cognitions overwhelmingly to such an extent that it destroys all sense reality in her mind. I never saw so much expression in a thing before, and we all know how much expression they have, this quote show her collusion with the reader and the conversing of her, at this stage, fascination with the paper. The protagonist can get the reader involved by sharing secrets that he [John] hates to have me write a word but she still secretly journalises the events until the last couple of days when she seems to be writing the events as the happen, as if part of her obsession is to document her discoveries of the encapsulating wallpaper that enthrals her. A biased opinion can be given by the first person narrative, this opinion shows John to be acting against the will of the protagonist, but because of her social place at the time it was seen as wrong for her to question him so she puts her views on paper you see he does not believe I am sick! And what is one to do? The story cannot portray Johns reasons for her confinement or his banning of writing and any mental exercise. The first person view can show the deterioration of the protagonists mental state as she slides into delusion. At the beginning of the text she admits that there is something wrong I never used to be so sensitive. I think it is due to this nervous condition. But later on she shows here blatant derangement This bed will not move! I tried to lift it and push it until I was lame, and then I got so angry I bit off a little piece at the corner but it hurt my teeth this shows her unthinking and irrational nature, she noticed earlier on that the bed is nailed to the floor. The language of the text alters showing her slowly shifting mental state. The story begins with normal language typical of the era that it was written in but it slowly becomes more erratic and obsessive. The language also becomes more darkly descriptive as her perception changes: It [the wallpaper] sticks horribly and the pattern just enjoys it! All those strangled heads and bulbous eyes and waddling fungus growths just shriek with derision this is a much less bright and colourful portrayal of her environment than before. Before she presents the paper as One of those sprawling, flamboyant patterns committing every artistic sin. this is a less obsessive and much brighter view of the paper. This story of The Yellow Wallpaper would not have the same powerful effect on the reader if it were written from another point of view. The protagonist could not collude with the audience, she could not ask rhetorical questions and she could not make the reader involved with her defiant, secret acts of writing. The reader could not feel as if they were hiding with her and the reader could not be persuaded to take her side on the issues arising from the paper and her confinement. The whole script would be a hollow and boring case study of a seemingly mad woman if it was not told by her, she brings life to the story. The protagonist could not ask but what is one to do? with the same half asking the audience. I think that the effectiveness of the first person perspective in the Yellow Wallpaper is much more involving for the reader and it makes the story seem more real than any other way of writing.

Each board of health must, at any time, put into account requirements and standard approach as outlined in the guidance document for Food Safety Program Practices of Operation. Doing business in emerging economies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Doing business in emerging economies - Essay Example sized manufacturing and supply company, catering for target markets within the United Kingdom’s population of approximately 59 million people (UK Census, 2001). The products ranges of perfumes and cosmetics are aimed at the medium to higher earning bracket of males and females. The executive management has been following world trends of local companies entering emerging markets, and the above average returns some of these companies have shown in a relatively short time has spur them to look at the possibility of going global with Madam Cosmetic’s. After a lot of collaboration it was decided to evaluate the opportunity and risks of investing in China. This instigating factors for this decision was the market-reforms that was implemented in China which resulted in the largest reduction of poverty and one of the fastest increases in income levels ever seen. China toady is the sixth-largest and fastest growing economy in the world. In 2004, its $1,65 trillion economy was about one-seventh that of the U.S. China’s rapidly expanding economy and 1,3 billion population for business, and most global companies, are either already involved in the Chinese market or have plans to do so soon (Julian Chen. 2005). China is currently one of the fastest growing economies in the world, driven by excessive government spending and a huge influx of money through the investment of Major International Companies. It is advocated as the country which presents a golden opportunity for businesses to expand and increase their profits. To proof this fact we need to look at the Macroeconomic indicators. This growth was mostly in the private sector and has forced market fundamentals to change to address gaps and inefficiencies of state-owned enterprises. China’s low vulnerability to external shock has helped it to maintain macroeconomic stability despite structural

Uniforms in school Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Uniforms in school - Essay Example There are three main reasons for this. The first is that it makes students more equal, the second is convenience, and the third is school pride. The simple fact is that if children wear uniforms, they are a lot less likely to notice differences between children from rich and from poor families. One of the main purposes of school is acclimatize students to the different types of people they will meet in their life. This is best done by allowing them to focus on the personality and identitiy of different people, what really counts, rather than be distracted by the surface, by the clothes that people wear. Students can easily be bullied if them come from poor families and have ragged clothes, likewise students who are rich and wear the latest designer duds might well become excessively popular. Uniforms tend to diminish or mask this unpleasant class distinctions. They promote equality, fraternity, and fellowship. They make people feel less alienated and more part of a community. Money after all is an artificial distinction. Shouldn’t people focus more on what really counts? Another useful argument is convenience. A lot of parents argue that because of school uniforms, they don’t have to buy clothes for their children, and this saves them time and money. But most children will have a few ordinary clothes next to their school uniform, but not many especially if they are in school five days a week. This also makes it easier for students to choose what they are going to wear at school. No matter that the choice is not so much made easy by virtue of uniformity, but because the students don’t really have much choice—the result is the same. Children are too young and inexperienced to be spending all their time thinking about self-presentation and the fickleness of fashion. Obsessing about these things can create a huge amount of psychological problems later in life, reducing the opportunity to get good work,

Strength Based Model Case Management Social Work Essay

Strength Based Model Case Management Social Work Essay A theory of service delivery that focuses on the individual strengths instead of weaknesses. This model is based on the understanding of the individuals deep internal resources and ability. The purpose of this model is to help survivors identify this strength and build life upon them. During the treatment, the clients must participate in the process of their recovery which controls the direction and pace of healing efforts. Each client helps his or her own plan for personal wellness. The plan is based on the clients psychological, medical, or legal needs. Together, the client and case manager regularly review the progress, discuss achievements and changes, and modify goals based on the clients evolving situation and needs. When a client is granted asylum, the case manager continues to provide assistance to satisfy the clients needs. This may include helping the client find information on educational or employment opportunities. Assessment: The strength based model focus mainly on developing and finding the clients strengths and abilities and makes a plan based on this. As this model considers the wellbeing of the clients, so the participation of the client in the treatment is very important. The client must figure out their needs of any aspects and give feedbacks of the current treatment. According to this point, the model is very adaptable to individuals as the diversity of their different situations. But this kind of model just encourage the client to live life as what they want and they can so the disability part has been left over which is very important in making progress. Planning: The strength based model needs a very detail and flexible service plan at the beginning which carried out mainly depends on the clients own abilities and needs because the client will live a life based on the plan. And the plan will be change over time because during the treatment the client and the case manager have to review the changes and progress that the client has met so the goals will be modified based on the reality and the process of achievement. Coordinating: The strength based models require a high standard of the coordinating between the client and the case manager. The case manager will give the client professional suggestions and make plans according to the clients condition which maybe not very consistent with the clients imagination and needs. But the client should be considerate since the accessibility and the efficiency. And the case manager should also have a regular contact with the client and be ready to make any changes to make sure the plan is always suitable and updated. Strengths and weaknesses of the strength based model: The strength of the strength based model is that it is easy to be carried out because it is based on the clients needs and ability so the client will be very cooperative during the treatment. And the psychological needs of the client are easily to be met so the confidence will be built to the client. It is very good to the clients mental health. Besides, the clients strengths are well maintained and developed. But the weaknesses of this kind of model are also obvious. It is because this kind of model only concerns about the strength so the weakness of the client has been ignored. But at many times the weakness plays the main role of whether the treatment is successful or not so the weaknesses cant be improved. Perspectives of the disability people: The strength based model is very practical for the disabled. Client empowerment is a central theme to this approach. To empower a client, the evaluation must be made to the disabled person and thus the achievable goals will be made along with the evaluation so a well-organized plan will be carried out to achieve the goals and the possibility of the success will hopefully be very high. Critics of the strength perspective suggest this is simply reframing problems in a better light. No one will succeed while being convinced that they will fail. Summary of the expected outcomes for the disabled: For the strength based model, the expected outcomes is that the mental health of the client is strengthened and many the disabled can joint well to the society like the normal people without much mental barriers. In addition, the client may develop certain advantages to a high level and gain some achievement better than normal person. But the disabled part cant be improved. Case management Model A collaborative process of assessment, planning, facilitation and advocacy for options and services which is aim to meet an individuals holistic needs through communication and available resources to promote quality cost-effective outcomes.Case Management has been used to a wide range of issues including community care for the aged, and people with disability and mental health issues; acute health settings; injury management and insurance related areas; correctional services; court systems; in the management of chronic health conditions; child and youth welfare; at risk populations in schools; managed care and employment programs. The case management model requires the organization deliver a range of services based on the comprehensive assessment that is used to develop a case or service plan. The plan is developed in collaboration with the client and reflects their choices and preferences. Case Managers provide the coordinating and specialist activities that flow from the particular setting, program and client population. However it is usual to identify the following process as core to Case Management: screening, assessment/risk management, care planning, implementing service arrangement, monitoring/evaluation and advocacy. Assessment: However the case management model is a bit similar to the strength based models as they both respect the needs of the clients. But the case management model focus on the hobbies of the client and encourage them to attend relative activities so that the purpose of treatment is achieved during the community time. So that this model is also based on the clients abilities in some degrees and can maintain the clients past lifestyle and an active mind and body as much as they can. But there will be many potential barriers hidden behind like the decrease of the clients health condition or the bad weather. So there will be many uncertain situations so the achieving of certain goals will require a long time and patience. Planning: Comparing with the strength based model, the case management model plan is relatively fixed because the clients hobbies and preference are stable. Based on this a long term plan is worked out and the plan will be seldom changed. But the plan is not very detail because its just an optional orientation. Coordinating: The case management requires coordination between the activity coordinator and the client as well as the relationships among different clients who participate in the activities. And the coordinator also has to consider the clients physical ability and other element like the economy and the climate and so on make sure the arrangement is made in advance. Strengths and weaknesses of the case management model: Like the strength based model, the case management model is also very easy to be executed since it is based on the priority of the clients to the activities according to their interests. This model is good for both the mental and physical development of the clients. But the weakness is that it is easy to be influenced by the uncertainty elements like the natural disasters and the clients health conditions and any personal issues of each part. Also this model cant be updated with the time going on along with the aging and the decrease of the clients health. So at the end, the client does maybe have no ability to participate or the quality of the participation is going down. Perspectives of the disability people: The case management model is widely used in our lives and its easy to be carried out. The perspective is that this model will be continuingly development and improved during the practice in reality. It will play a main role in the recovery or dealing with the disability problems. The potential ability and interests will be found during the process of the treatment so there will be a bright future of this model. Summary of the expected outcomes for the disabled: For the case management model, the clients life is fulfilled and interesting than before. Also this is very good for the psychological development like the strength based model. And it will be a big contribution to the arrangement of the arrangements of the physical therapy. But this model is not good for finding an occupation for the client and it is easy to make the client depend on others. Comparisons of the two models The strength based model focus mainly on developing and finding the clients strengths and abilities and makes a plan based on this. However the case management model is a bit similar to the strength based models as they both respect the needs of the clients. But the case management model focus on the hobbies of the client and encourage them to attend relative activities so that the purpose of treatment is achieved during the community time. Comparing with the strength based model, the case management model plan is relatively fixed because the clients hobbies and preference are stable but the strength based model is very flexible and keep changing with the clients condition. The two models also have difference with the coordinating part. The strength based models need a high level of coordinating between the client and the case management however the case management model requires a good relationship between the activity coordinator and the client as well as the relationship among cli ents. If the clients have mental goals we suggest that they choose the strength based model but if the client has the needs of physically requirement then wed better use the case management model for her.

Formation of Corporations and Stocks Essay

* Why does a company choose to form as a corporation? What are the steps required to become a corporation? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the corporate form of doing business? Corporations are created in order to separate the businesses finances from the person’s individual finances so that they can protect themselves financially. The advantages of forming a corporation are that the business can obtain the credibility so that consumers are more comfortable. Since consumers normally prefers to do business with a corporation. Also by forming a corporation the person protects their assets and name by forming a corporation. The disadvantages are that the process is lengthy and pricey. Also corporations often end up paying more in taxes. Corporations are also monitored very closely and must be in compliance with several entities. * Why is preferred stock referred to as preferred? What are some of the features added to preferred stock that make it more attractive to investors? Would you select preferred stock or common stock as an investment? Why? Preferred stock is considered preferred because it has dividend preference over common stock. Preferred stockholders have the right to receive dividends before common stockholders. The per share dividend amount is stated as a percentage of the preferred stocks per value or as a specified amount. Preferred stockholders must ne paid their annual dividend plus any dividends in arrears before common stockholders receive any dividends. I would select referred stock over common stock because I want to get paid as quickly as possible. * What are the different types of dividends corporations may issue? When should a corporation pay dividends? Do you prefer a stock dividend or a cash dividend? Why There are four types of dividends: 1. cash dividends, 2. property dividends, 3. scrip (note), and 4. stock dividends. A corporation should pay dividends when it has retained earning, adequate cash, and a declaration of dividends. I would prefer a cash dividend. If the corporation issues stock, they are not having to spend actual cash. I want to be reassured that the business actually has my money. I have seen it too many times where huge corporations lie and cheat on paper. I also do not really like the stock market and never have been good at buying, selling, or owning stock.

Discrimination Paper Essay

As you all probably know: discrimination is any situation in which a group or individual is treated differently based on something other than individual reason, usually their membership in a socially distinct group or category. These categories include ethnicity, sex, religion, age or disability. Discrimination can be thought of as favorable or unfavorable; however, today, â€Å"discrimination† is usually considered unfavorable. Racial discrimination, discrimination against women, and discrimination outside the United States, are some of the most common types of discrimination in the world. One of the most pervasive forms of discrimination in the United States is directed toward racial groups. There has always been conflict among the different races of people. The Constitution of the United States recognized the legality of slavery, the ultimate form of discrimination. Black males are one of the most common victims of discrimination. For example, a black male in the â€Å"ghetto† walks into a convenient store, the first thing that comes to the clerks mind is robbery or maybe even worse. African-Americans and other people of different races other than white have always been mistreated or judged just because of their color. Racial discrimination against Hispanic-Americans is also widespread. Employment, housing, and access to the judicial system is a problem for people other than whites. Asian-Americans also suffer discrimination. During World War II, the Japanese were forced to evacuate from the West Coast. American women have been victimized by discrimination in voting, employment, and other civil rights. Women were once known as â€Å"housewives†, and many men and women still think that is what a woman should be. Not only do people think women shouldn’t work, but they don’t think they should vote, serve on juries, or do anything else other than sit at home and do house work. In the late 160’s women organized to demand legal equality with men. They organized into the National Organization for Women and other groups for education, employment, and government. In 17, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was passed to the Constitution and submitted to the states for ratification. The ERA was suppose to eliminate legal discrimination against women, but it was not approved by the 18 deadline. Working toward the ERA built a skilled leadership of female politicians and lobbyists. Most nations practice discrimination against foreigners within their borders. It may be religious, such as Muslims against Jews, Protestants against Catholics; racial, or sexual discrimination, as in many countries where women have few rights. People in other countries are always fighting because of discrimination. International efforts to combat discrimination were minimal until the passage of the United Nations Charter in 145. The charter encourages â€Å"respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion. Discrimination causes great conflict among many people. Regardless of race, religion, sex, or any other characteristics, a person should not be discriminated. Discrimination is one of the reasons this country is falling apart. Every man and woman whether they are black, white, yellow or green should be able to equally do what ever they wish. Most people don’t realize that every person, color not mattering, came from the same place.

Free Essays on A Streetcar Named Desire Free Essays on A Streetcar Named Desire Deception and Illusion in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire Blanche DuBois succinctly summarizes herself and her vision of the world with two words: â€Å"I misrepresent.† (A Streetcar Named Desire, hereafter SND, p. 117 ). In fact, she misrepresents virtually everything about herself and her world. For Blanche DuBois, the world is composed of multiple elements in which she either deceives herself unknowingly or intentionally embraces an illusion. Blanche shows up at her sister’s home in New Orleans, having lost the family plantation in Mississippi. She holds herself blameless for this loss- a deception of personal responsibility. Symbolically, the plantation’s very name, Belle Reve, implies a beautiful dream of a life style that may never have been a reality. Blanche further deludes herself by maintaining a contradiction about the importance of her own physical appearance and constantly misrepresents her own age. She has a personal illusion about love which was tragically shattered when she was very young, and pursues a relationships with Mitch which is, itself, shattered when the deceptions of her past are revealed. This illusion is highlighted by the dynamic tension between Blanche and Stanley, culminating in a harsh rape scene wherein he enacts the reality Blanche has been trying to avoid. As she slips totally into a world of unreality, Blanche even speculates that a knight in shining armor, Shep Huntleigh, an alleged millionaire, is going to come for her. In each of her illusions, Blanche clings to unrealistic views of herself and her world, in order to deny the sad reality to which she has descended as a charity case in her sister’s meager existence. Blanche comes to her sister Stella Kowalski’s home with a valise full of clothes and trappings from another kind of life. It is a life she wants desperately to believe she once led. It bears no semblance to Stella’s rather drab r... Free Essays on A Streetcar Named Desire The play A street car named desire by Tennessee Williams is about a downfall of a fading Southern Belle named Blanche Dubois. The last scene of the play is a significant one as it sums up the whole play and states the ending and the main issues of the play. Here Blanche is taken into a mental asylum due to the rape that has taken place in the previous chapter. This shows the total damage done to her by Stanley. She becomes mental and loses touch with reality. Williams uses various kinds of techniques like the sound effects, changes in characterization and certain issues like being in a world dominated by men, domestic violence and lunacy in order to make this an important scene. At the beginning of the scene its been told that Blanche tells Stella about the rape. Stella is placed with no choice but to not believe her sister. At the start of the scene Stella tells Eunice, "I couldn't believe her story and go on living with Stanley." Eunice concurs: "Don't ever believe it. Life has got to go on. No matter what happens, you've got to keep on going." Eunice argues that male companionship is a womans survival in the face of social convention. She is a victim of society just like Blanche. Knowing that she just had a baby she looks at the future with hope and therefore refuses to believe Blanche. This may place her to be somewhat selfish of choosing her husband over family but in another way she may be doing this for Blanche best interests. After Mitch threw her off, Blanche lost touch with reality, so Stella has arranged a "rest" for Blanche at an insane asylum in the country. In this scene we see Blanche complete loss of touch with reality when she says I shall die for eating an unwashed grape. Here she is completely making up what she thinks how she should die. She is living her dream world. The audience feels compassion towards her as they observe how bad the rape has affected her state of mind and therefo...
